    [Results of Express Lanes]
I saw a wash in california that added an express lane and doubled volume. Is this the same results everyone else is getting?

Was it a full serve that started to do express washes?

yes, a full serve carwash, added an express lane. I would think with the benefits of an express lane, do whatever it takes to make it work, even if it means reconfiguring a site.

I talked to the guy that owns this full serve the other day ( cwguy.com/?p=688 ). He is very excited about the express idea. He did no advertising and did an express wash for $3.00 with no prep. He said he got about 300 – 350 extra cars last month. He is also fixing to switch to an express format with a pay station, new equipment, free vacuums and no prep. Will be interesting what happens to him.

so this guy actually dropped from $8 to $3 in one move? Big Jump. Any reason he didn't consider like a middle of the road $5,$6, or $7 like most express washes charge or maybe he's trying to get some local buzz going.

Personally $3 is totally nuts. The only reason $3 people have gotten hype in the past is because they only talk about volume and people get confused that 200,000 is good, however 200,000 cars at $3 in reality financially sucks.

I agree with you washman. The numbers do not make sense. He is about to purchase new equipment but that is no excuse.

300 more cars/month * 12 months=3600 more cars/year* $3/car= $10,800 more REVENUE. However this added revenue means nothing unless it is profitable. Operational cost, maintenance cost, and variable costs probably render the express wash a 50 cent profit/car*3600 cars= $1800 profit. However the express lane is probably taking business from his other offering which profits at about $9 per car. That means to make the same profit that the express made all year, he would only need to increase volume through his other wash by 200 cars/year. A little marketing can do that. Not to mention that express washes=express quality=bad branding. Difference between 4 minutes and 1 minute does not mean as much to a customer as clean car vs. not clean car. I believe the overall impact of this guys addition is going to prove negative, and investing more into it would be wasteful.
